Ljubica Todorovic is an emerging artist living just outside of Calgary, Alberta. She is a recent graduate of the Alberta College of Art & Design's Drawing department (2006), and has been part of Art Central’s Art Loop studios for one year. Ljubica’s oil paintings are vibrant and luscious, beckoning the viewer to step closer. On the side she produces drawings and paintings depicting rabbits as part of an ongoing personal study involving childhood memories.

Artist Statement
My current work attempts to bridge the gap between visual representation and abstraction of form by using line as structure and paint for movement. I begin by roughing-out circular forms using drawing materials (soft pastel, conte) on a fresh, white canvas. At one point I was using references of rabbits to extract abstracted forms hidden within their fluffy coats and hunched up bodies, which were translated into organic, earthy forms on canvas. My new works exist from beginning to end without the use of any photographic reference. Color seeps from the plump masses of paint, dancing in rhythm with curvatures of line.

The act of creating a painting is translated into unconscious memory pursuing a grasp on reality, where the present is the gateway to discovering the essence of the past. My work is a reincarnation of memory, except now the visual output is severely abstracted down to just form and colour. It is an echo of visual phenomena, likened to viewing the inside of one’s eyelids before sleep sets in. When concept dictates the outcome, here is my result: The painting serves as a mild trace of permanence, but will never be a substitute for what once was considered a delightful existence.
