Constructing Paintings

Process Sketchbook

A peek into how I construct ideas for abstract landscape paintings. I draw little pencil thumbnails in a 5"x7' sketchbook. Sometimes I will flip the book another way if I feel that the sketch is going in the direction of complete abstraction rather than partial abstraction. These were done in the car on a daytrip to Banff National Park. The bonus of living in Calgary is that the mountains are just a short drive away, so there is a good variety of inspiration around here. Mountains, lakes, flat prairie expanses, wildlife, bustling Metro city and, of course, endlessly interesting skies! [nggallery id=46]
